Essential Materials for This Beginner Beanie

1- 3.25 mm straight needle.
2- Vardhman Woolista Merino Wool Yarn (4 ply/stranded, 8 ply thickness, 100% pure merino wool, Yardage approx. 180-200 mtrs per 100gm ball).
3- Other optional tools are a tape measure, scissors, and yarn needle.

Beanie Knitting Pattern with Step-by-Step Instructions

Casting on: 124 sts for unizex beanie with Vardhman Woolista Merino Wool Yarn/3.25 mm straight needle.
Finished Size & Fit: The total length measures approximately 8.5 inches. It is designed to fit head circumferences between 22 and 24 inches, making it a one-size-fits-most adult beanie.
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate.
Pattern Language: English.
Techniques Used: Cast on 124 stitches and work in 2×2 rib (K2, P2) until the brim measures 1 inch or your preferred length. Then transition to the main lacenpattern and continue knitting until the total length reaches 8 (7 Body + 1 Brim) inches. Complete the crown shaping, cut the yarn leaving a long tail, and neatly sew the edges together using mattress stitch or your preferred seaming method to finish this beginner beanie.

Brim Instructions for the Beanie

Here we’ve used the most popular and easy 2×2 rib stitch brim. You can make the brim as long or short as you like depending on your preference. The full brim pattern details are given below.

Row 1 (RS): * K2, P2 * repeat from * to *

Repeat these rows until the border measures 1 inch. For my beanie, I knitted a total of 10 rows for the brim.

Knit the Main Body of the Beanie

For this beanie, I used a lovely lace pattern that looks like little Y shapes. It gives the hat such a classic and attractive look that people always notice.

The pattern is a 12-row repeat, so you simply keep repeating these 12 rows until you reach the desired length for your beanie. To work the design, cast on a multiple of 7 stitches, then add 5 more stitches at the end (3 extra stitches plus 2 for the edges). Repeat Rows 1–12 until the hat reaches the desired length. For my beanie, I worked 6 full pattern repeats plus 6 additional rows, for a total length of approximately 8 inches (1-inch brim + 7-inch pattern section)

Complete the Beanie with Crown Shaping

To give the beanie a nice, perfect shape at the top, I’ve shared the stitch decrease method below.

Now I have 90 stitches remaining.
Row 2 (WS): Purl all sts
Row 3 (RS): SL1, P1, * P1, K2tog, SSK * repeat from * to * …………. last 3 sts P2, K1
Now I have 56 stitches remaining.
Row 4 (WS): Purl all sts
Row 5 (RS): SL1, P2, * K1, SSK * ………… last 2 sts P1, K1
Now I have 39 stitches remaining.
Row 6 (WS): Purl all sts
Row 7 (RS): SL1, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, ……………..
Now I have 20 stitches remaining.
Row 8 (WS): Purl all sts

After the crown decreases, you’ll have 20 stitches left. Cut the yarn, leaving a nice long tail, and thread it onto a tapestry needle. Then, one by one, slip all 20 stitches onto the needle. Gently pull the yarn tight to close the top of the hat and weave in the tail securely.

Once you’ve finished weaving in all the ends, your beanie is ready to wear! Then, pull the yarn tightly to close the top of the crown securely. Carefully sew the side edges together to close the seam. Finally, weave in the loose ends and trim any excess yarn.
